Reports of crashes on android, but not on ios for the app Bangkok Pool League.

What is going on?

On Oct 3, 2026, a version of the app was released that allowed for Over The Air (OTA) updates. This type of update allows me to change most parts of the app without having to submit a new build to the app stores (Google Play and Apple AppStore) for approval. (At the time of this writing, Apple has a huge approval wait list, in the past few days average approval time has jumped from 12 hours to 14 days --- unacceptable)

You'll know there is an over the air update because when you open the app, you will see a dialog that will tell you an update has has been downloaded and you need to restart. You just press restart and everything is good to go. No need to go to the app store and push update and download a new buiild anymore. This means I can push out bug fixes and improvements without waiting for approval. This is really good to have.

However, there are some updates that I cannot do OTA. These are changes that affect the foundation of the app. These types of updates require me to rebuild and resubmit.

Android (Google) made an annoucenment forcing all Android apps to be built in a certain way. (R8 Minification if you want to look it up). They said if I don't do it by a certain time, they will pull the app.

So I did.

I submitted the new build to Android, and thus the waiting began.

At the same time I did some OTA updates as well. OTA updates get sent out immediately with no approval period.

Those OTA updates were based on the latest build (which was just submitted).

What is supposed to happen is that OTA pushes won't take affect until the build and the OTA versions match up. Apparently that didn't happen for Android. (Note: that safeguard DID work for iOS).

So since an OTA was pushed based on build 186, everyone still had 185.

Thus a crash.

The solution was, wait for Android to approve, and push a new build and allow everyone to get build 186.
