Shane Van Boening began his campaign at the inaugural Arizona Open Pool Championship in Yuma with a dominant performance, defeating Wayne Farnum 10-0 to reach the Last 64 on August 13–16. The five-time US Open champion is seeking another major title after winning the Florida Open recently and aims to secure victory on home soil at Quechan Casino Resort as part of the World Nineball Tour’s US Swing event.
Other top players advanced through day one, including reigning World Champion Carlo Biado and 18-year-old Felix Vogel who won a quick 10-0 match over Mark Stustman in just 34 minutes. Aloysius Yapp also secured his place with a 10-7 win against Max Eberle despite admitting he struggled with break control, while former World Champion Johnny Archer made an unexpected return by beating Austria’s Max Lechner 10-8.
Several high-profile names were eliminated early in the straight knockout format, including Sun Yi Hsuan defeating Albanian Eklent Kaçi and exits for Justin Bergman and Corey Deuel as well. With the field reduced to 64 players remaining after round one, Van Boening will face Albin Ouschan while Yapp takes on Andri Januarta in subsequent rounds leading up to the Cactus Trophy finals.
