4 Bangkok private schools seek closure, 20 to 30 others nationwide shut down

Four private schools in Bangkok have requested closure for the upcoming 2026 academic year, while an estimated 20 to 30 other private schools nationwide are seeking similar shutdowns amid economic crisis and declining birthrates. Supaset Kanakul of the Association Board of Coordination and Promotion of Private Education (APPE) disclosed these figures following a meeting with Ministry of Education Minister Prasert Chantararuangthong, though specific approval has not yet been granted for any closures to proceed.

During their discussion, officials also addressed concerns regarding welfare funds for private school teachers, particularly concerning foreign staff who wish to contribute but face eligibility hurdles due to the 10-year contribution requirement versus an average stay of six to seven years in Thailand. The Ministry noted that few foreign teachers have expressed interest and instructed relevant departments to study the issue before making further decisions on participation benefits.

Regarding the closures, APPE assured parents and staff that plans will be finalized prior to approval to ensure student transfers are managed and legal entitlements for educational personnel are protected. As of now, the Education Ministry is preparing to investigate whether additional private schools plan to request closure for 2026. What do you think about the potential long-term impact on Thailand's education sector?
